The Sprouse Twins Grew Up Very Different And Their Mom Made Sure Of It

Long before they became famous Disney stars, Cole and Dylan Sprouse were already learning how to be completely different people — even while growing up side by side.

The twins began acting before they could even talk properly. At just eight months old, they shared the role of Patrick Kelly on the ABC sitcom Grace Under Fire. For most children, that kind of spotlight might have made them nearly identical in the public eye. But behind the scenes, their mother, Melanie Wright, worked hard to make sure each son developed his own personality.

In an interview years ago, Melanie explained that while both boys were raised with the same values — respect, responsibility, chores, prayer, and good manners — she never wanted them to feel like copies of each other.

And they couldn’t have been more different.

Dylan, born only 15 minutes before Cole, was outgoing, energetic, and fearless. He loved loud music, especially the Beastie Boys, and spent much of his childhood dreaming about becoming a stuntman. Inspired by his mother’s then-boyfriend, actor and stunt coordinator Spike Silver, Dylan was always drawn toward action and adventure.

Cole, on the other hand, was more reserved and thoughtful. While Dylan chased excitement, Cole found himself fascinated by geology, nature, and music from artists like Neil Young. Even as kids, their personalities naturally pulled them in opposite directions.

What they did share was an undeniable talent for acting.

When the twins starred alongside Adam Sandler in Big Daddy, the actor reportedly told their mother that the boys were so talented it made him “sick to his stomach.” Even at seven years old, their humor and chemistry stood out.

When asked what they liked most about each other during an interview, Dylan joked, “He’s a nut.”

Cole’s response was even more classic:
“Nothing… except he’s really nice.”

Fans around the world later fell in love with them as Zack and Cody in Disney Channel’s The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and Suite Life on Deck. For years, they became one of television’s most recognizable sibling duos.

But after Disney, the brothers chose very different paths.

Cole moved toward darker and more dramatic roles, eventually becoming widely known for playing Jughead Jones in Riverdale. He later appeared in films like Lisa Frankenstein, showing a more mature side of his acting career.

Dylan, meanwhile, stepped into romantic dramas and emotional lead roles in movies such as After We Collided, Beautiful Disaster, and Beautiful Wedding.

Although they haven’t shared the screen together since 2012, fans still hope for a reunion someday.

During an appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark, Dylan admitted he’d be open to acting with Cole again — though he joked that movies about twins are usually “pretty cheesy.”

He even teased his brother for being annoyed that Tom Hardy played twin gangsters in Legend.

“I told Cole we probably weren’t exactly first choice for that role anyway,” Dylan laughed.

Outside Hollywood, both brothers have also built happy personal lives.

In 2023, Dylan married model Barbara Palvin during a beautiful wedding ceremony in Hungary. Cole has been in a longtime relationship with model Ari Fournier.

Despite their separate careers and lifestyles, the connection between the twins remains incredibly strong.

Speaking on Kelly Ripa’s podcast in 2024, Cole described Dylan and Barbara as “perfect together” and said he couldn’t be happier for them.

When asked whether his brother might start a family soon, Cole laughed and joked:

“Maybe then my dad will finally stop asking me when I’m having kids.”

Years after their Disney fame, Cole and Dylan Sprouse continue proving that even twins can follow completely different paths — while still staying deeply connected at heart.
