The Matrix Resurrections Gets Free Streaming Home After Surprise Matrix 5 Announcement

Shortly after Warner Bros. surprisingly announced the development of The Matrix 5, The Matrix Resurrections found a new home for free streaming.

Serving as a direct sequel to 2003’s The Matrix Revolutions, Resurrections marks the fourth installment in the Matrix film series. Set 60 years after the events of the previous film, it follows Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) as they navigate new lives within the Matrix, devoid of memories of each other or their past.

Reported by CBR, the announcement of The Matrix 5 coincided with Resurrections becoming available for free streaming. In addition to its original streaming on Max, the film is now accessible on the Amazon-owned platform Freevee.

Despite its simultaneous theatrical release, Resurrections has been on Max since its premiere, making its debut on a free platform a first, albeit with advertisements.

The availability of Resurrections on Freevee offers non-Max subscribers a chance to catch up on the narrative ahead of The Matrix 5. Anticipated to intertwine closely with its predecessor, the fifth installment is expected to delve deeper into the themes introduced in the fourth film.

While Resurrections faced criticism for perceived lack of originality, its exploration of franchise themes received praise, despite its commercial underperformance.

Given the uncertainty surrounding the franchise’s future following Resurrections’ lukewarm reception, Warner Bros.’ announcement of The Matrix 5 came as a surprise.

Although details about the upcoming film remain scarce, it is confirmed that Lana and Lilly Wachowski will not be involved, marking a significant departure from the franchise’s earlier films. Drew Goddard, known for his work on The Martian and World War Z, will step in as director.

While casting and plot details for The Matrix 5 remain undisclosed, the potential for Reeves and Moss to reprise their roles remains plausible. With Resurrections hinting at Neo and Trinity’s desire to reshape the Matrix, audiences may look to the fourth film for clues about the franchise’s direction moving forward.
