On January 12, 2023, Doherty posted a video on her Instagram account showing her undergoing treatment, tears in her eyes. She explained in the caption that her CT scan on January 5th had revealed the presence of metastases (Mets) in her brain. The video depicted the process of being fitted for a mask used during brain radiation therapy.

In her post, the 52-year-old actress expressed her fears and the emotional turmoil she’s going through. She shared her extreme claustrophobia and the overwhelming nature of the situation. Despite her fears, she acknowledged her gratitude for her excellent medical team, including Dr. Amin Mirhadi, and the supportive technicians at Cedar Sinai Hospital. She highlighted that this is the harsh reality of what cancer can look like.

A day before this post, Doherty had shared a throwback video from January, showing her being fitted for a thermoplastic mask that covered her face and neck.

In another video from January 16, she mentioned having surgery to remove a tumor in her head and for a biopsy. She expressed her petrifying fear, worries about potential complications, and concern about the impact on her loved ones.

Doherty’s friends, including director Kevin Smith, Selma Blair, and Sarah Michelle Gellar, expressed their support and encouragement through heartfelt messages. They praised her bravery and indomitable spirit in the face of adversity.

Doherty herself shared a series of photos from her friends and expressed her gratitude for their unwavering support. She also referred to her mother as “a beacon of light” and a source of endless support and love.

Following her initial cancer diagnosis in 2015, Doherty sued her former manager for leaving her without health insurance, which had led to a delay in her breast cancer diagnosis. Later, a settlement was reached in the case.
