Sally Field, 76, fought ageism in Hollywood throughout her career and never got plastic surgery

In today’s celebrity landscape, it’s uncommon to find stars who haven’t undergone cosmetic procedures, particularly given the immense pressure often faced by women in the spotlight. Negotiating the demands of Hollywood can be daunting, yet even at 76, Sally Field has steadfastly defied many of the industry’s norms.

While we admire Field’s performances in movies like “Forrest Gump” and “Steel Magnolias,” what truly resonates with us is her personal crusade against ageism in Hollywood.

Born in Pasadena, California, in 1946, Field initially gained fame through television roles in series such as “Gidget” and “The Flying Nun.” Transitioning seamlessly from television to film, the now 76-year-old star has left an indelible mark on the industry.

With an impressive filmography that includes classics like “Smokey and the Bandit,” “Norma Rae,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and “Forrest Gump,” Field has not only showcased her acting prowess but also her resilience in challenging societal expectations of aging in Hollywood.

In February 2023, the actress was honored with the Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award, marking a crowning moment in her illustrious career. During her acceptance speech, she graciously reflected on her remarkable journey in the entertainment industry.

Field’s accolades are numerous and well-deserved, including two Academy Awards, multiple Emmy and Golden Globe wins, and a Tony nomination. Her most recent achievement, the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award, adds another milestone to her impressive resume.

Known for her activism and timeless talent, Field’s acceptance speech resonated with humility and depth as she delved into the complexities of her acting career.

“Offstage, I often felt reserved and cautious, but onstage, I found liberation. Acting has always been about those rare moments when I feel truly alive,” she shared candidly. “Every day as an actor brings new discoveries, revealing parts of myself I never knew existed.”

Clad in a stunning black dress, her natural gray hair adding to her elegance, Field epitomized beauty and grace as she spoke passionately about her lifelong dedication to her craft.

“Acting has been my life’s work, and I cherish every moment of it,” she expressed. “For nearly six decades, I’ve been privileged to pursue my passion, and there’s not a day that goes by when I don’t feel grateful to call myself an actor.”

During an interview with NPR in 2016, Field reflected on her portrayal of Doris Miller, an aging and eccentric character, emphasizing the acceptance and empowerment that comes with aging naturally:

“At 70, I consider myself an old woman, and that’s perfectly fine. I’ve gathered strength over the years, I’ve embraced my age, I’ve earned every wrinkle and gray hair. I have the right to age gracefully, imperfections and all. There are things I may not like about my appearance, such as my neck, but that’s okay.”

This isn’t the first instance where Field has addressed the notion of embracing natural aging. In a conversation with Good Housekeeping back in 2009, she discussed her decision to refrain from cosmetic procedures throughout her career:

“When I see myself on TV, I notice the changes in my appearance. I might think, ‘Oh, I wish my neck looked different’ or ‘My face seems to be sagging.’ But then I observe some women who’ve had plastic surgery, and I rethink my perspective. I used to find them stunning when they were younger, but now I feel a sense of loss. It feels like they’re denying who they’ve become.”
