Cracker Barrel Takes Responsibility for Noose-Inspired Decor, Apologizes

A Cracker Barrel restaurant in Connecticut recently faced criticism when a customer noticed certain decorations that appeared to resemble “nooses” hanging from the ceiling. The restaurant has since issued an apology and clarified the nature of these decorations.

Decorations Misinterpreted

Cracker Barrel explained that the items in question were not actual nooses but rather wrapped cords attached to decorative pieces. However, the restaurant acknowledged that it was entirely unacceptable for their employees to overlook the potential resemblance to nooses when arranging these decorations.

A customer named Alfonso Robinson tweeted images of the decorations, expressing concern about the presence of “nooses” on the ceiling at the Cracker Barrel in East Windsor, Connecticut.

Cracker Barrel responded to the tweet the same evening, clarifying that the “noose” decoration was, in fact, a wrapped cord from an antique soldering iron used as part of the restaurant’s display. The restaurant assured the public that the item had been removed.

In the aftermath of the incident, activists visited the restaurant and engaged in a “positive” and “constructive” conversation with the restaurant manager, Mark Smith. Smith acknowledged that the cord resembling a noose had been displayed in the restaurant for 22 years, and no concerns had been raised until recently. He invited the activists, led by Keren Prescott, the founder of PowerUp-Manchester, to inspect the premises and gain a better understanding of the situation.

Prescott appreciated Smith’s openness during the discussion and noted his willingness to consider perspectives that might differ from his own, given his background as a white man.

On social media, several users called on Cracker Barrel to conduct a review of decorations in all its locations or provide a timeline for such a review process.

In response, Cracker Barrel issued a statement to Fox News, emphasizing its commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment. The company acknowledged that while some of its historic decor may resemble earlier times, its culture is firmly rooted in the present. Cracker Barrel expressed gratitude to the guest who brought the matter to their attention and promptly removed the item in question. They consider this incident a mistake that needed correction and continue to strive for a culture of hospitality that respects and welcomes all visitors.
