Dolly Parton’s CMA Tribute Raises $1 Million for the Cause Closest to Her Heart

Some of the most meaningful tributes are measured not by applause, but by the lives they touch long after the music ends.

Dolly Parton has spent decades bringing joy to millions through her songs, her humor, and her unmistakable personality. But one of the most personal parts of her legacy has always been her commitment to helping children discover the magic of reading.

Now, a special country music celebration has helped support that mission in a remarkable way. Following the CMA tribute to Dolly Parton on October 21, the Country Music Association announced a combined $1 million donation to Dolly’s Imagination Library, with support from Belmont University, The Walt Disney Company, and the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp.

It was a beautiful reminder that Dolly’s influence reaches far beyond the stage.

The Personal Story Behind Imagination Library

Dolly’s love for children and education is rooted in her own family history. Growing up in East Tennessee, she watched her father struggle because he could not read or write. That experience stayed with her and helped inspire a dream: making books more accessible to children from the very beginning of their lives.

In 1995, Dolly launched the Imagination Library in her home county of Sevier County, Tennessee. What began as a local effort grew into an international book-gifting program.

Today, eligible children from birth through age five can receive a free, age-appropriate book every month, regardless of their family’s income, in participating communities. The program is supported through partnerships between the Dollywood Foundation and local organizations.

For a child, a book arriving in the mail can be much more than a gift. It can become a bedtime ritual, a chance to explore a new world, or the beginning of a lifelong love of learning.

A Night of Music With a Purpose

The October 21 television special, CMA Presents I Will Always Love You: A Celebration of Dolly Parton, brought together country music stars and other performers to honor Dolly’s extraordinary career.

The event featured performances from artists including Carrie Underwood, Reba McEntire, Vince Gill, Lainey Wilson, Brad Paisley, and many others. The celebration highlighted Dolly’s songwriting, her influence on generations of musicians, and her contributions beyond entertainment.

But the tribute also created an opportunity to support something deeply connected to Dolly’s personal story.

On October 22, the CMA announced that the combined contribution from the CMA, Belmont University, Disney, and Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp had reached $1 million for Imagination Library. Disney had also supported the initiative through proceeds from the theatrical re-release of 9 to 5.

It was a powerful example of how a celebration of an artist can also become an investment in the next generation.

Why This Gift Means So Much

Dolly has always spoken about the importance of dreaming big, learning, and believing in possibilities. Her Imagination Library puts those values into action, one book at a time.

Early exposure to books can help children develop language skills, curiosity, and confidence. It can also create meaningful moments between children and the adults who read with them.

For families facing financial pressures, receiving a new book every month can make a genuine difference. And because the program reaches children during their earliest years, it helps introduce reading before they even enter school.

The $1 million gift will support the mission of putting more books into young readers’ hands, extending the impact of a program inspired by Dolly’s own childhood.

A Legacy That Lives Beyond the Music

Dolly Parton’s songs will continue to be sung on stages around the world. Her performances will continue to bring people together, and her unmistakable spirit will remain part of country music history.

Yet her legacy is also being written in quieter places: in living rooms where parents read bedtime stories, in small hands turning the pages of a new book, and in children discovering possibilities they may never have imagined.

Somewhere, a child will open the mailbox and find a book waiting just for them.

That simple moment captures the heart of Dolly’s mission. And perhaps it is one of the most beautiful ways her legacy can continue—not only through the music people remember, but through the young minds she helps inspire.

Because a song can touch a heart in a moment. A book can open a world that lasts a lifetime.
