Happy’s Place Pays Tribute to Dolly Parton in Emotional Episode Featuring Reba McEntire

The upcoming episode of NBC’s Happy’s Place will include a touching tribute to Dolly Parton, creating an especially meaningful moment for star Reba McEntire and the show’s cast and crew.

In Season 3, Episode 2, titled “Skeletons in the Closet,” Bobbie, played by McEntire, and her half-sister Isabella, portrayed by Belissa Escobedo, honor their late father, Happy, as part of Día de los Muertos, the Mexican tradition of remembering loved ones who have passed away.

Their memorial altar will also feature a photograph of Parton, McEntire’s longtime friend and former guest star on the television sitcom Reba.

According to McEntire, the decision to include Parton was made unexpectedly. The cast was filming the episode on the day of Parton’s passing, and the actress felt that incorporating the tribute was a natural and heartfelt way to remember her friend.

“The episode is about remembering those we love who have passed on,” McEntire explained in a statement released by NBC. She added that Parton would always be loved and remembered.

An Unexpected Moment That Made the Episode Even More Meaningful

Series co-creator and showrunner Kevin Abbott told TVLine that the timing was extraordinary. The episode was already exploring the ways people continue to honor and remember those they have lost when the news about Parton arrived.

Abbott wondered how the loss of such a close friend would affect McEntire as she prepared to film the emotionally significant scenes. Looking back, however, he felt the circumstances gave the episode an even deeper sense of authenticity.

The showrunner, who had worked with both McEntire and Parton on Reba, also spoke warmly about Parton’s character. He described her as someone whose genuine kindness matched the public image audiences had come to love, adding that her personal warmth was even greater than people might realize.

Cast and Crew Remember Dolly Before Filming

The tribute extended beyond the episode itself. Before filming began, the Happy’s Place cast and crew joined the studio audience for a moment of silence in Parton’s honor.

Abbott acknowledged that moving from a solemn tribute into filming a comedy can be challenging. Nevertheless, he recalled the taping as a special experience, describing an atmosphere that felt almost as though Parton’s spirit was present with them.

For everyone involved, the moment provided an opportunity to acknowledge the loss of a beloved entertainer while reinforcing the episode’s central message: the people we love remain part of our lives through our memories and the ways we continue to honor them.

Abbott said he was grateful the tribute happened when it did. Although it was a small gesture, it allowed the Happy’s Place family to recognize Parton as someone whose memory would continue to be cherished.

He described the experience as both sad and deeply moving, emphasizing how much the tribute meant to McEntire.

The episode of Happy’s Place, featuring the tribute to Parton, is scheduled to air Friday, October 30, at 8 p.m. Eastern/Pacific on NBC, with streaming available on Peacock.
