Madonna Returns to the VMAs After 23 Years — and Her Comeback Has Everyone Talking

After more than two decades away from the MTV Video Music Awards stage, Madonna has officially returned — and she made sure nobody would forget it.

The 68-year-old pop icon opened the 2026 VMAs in Los Angeles on September 27, marking her first live performance at the awards show since 2003.

And she didn’t come alone.

Madonna brought some major pop stars with her

Madonna kicked off the ceremony with Sabrina Carpenter, performing their collaboration “Bring Your Love.” Later in the performance, Charli XCX joined her for “Danceteria,” giving the opening number an even bigger surprise factor.

The performance also included appearances from Julia Garner, Sombr, Seth Rogen and other guests, turning the opening into a large-scale celebration of Madonna’s music and career.

For longtime fans, the return carried plenty of nostalgia.

Madonna’s previous live VMA performance was back in 2003, when she appeared alongside Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera in one of the most remembered moments in the show’s history.

A very different kind of comeback

Madonna’s return comes during a particularly significant year for her relationship with the VMAs.

She entered the 2026 ceremony as one of the night’s most nominated artists, with nominations connected to her latest project, Confessions II. She ultimately took home several awards during the ceremony, including Artist of the Year and Best Collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter.

During her acceptance speech for Artist of the Year, Madonna reflected on her career and encouraged people to believe in themselves and pursue the music they want to create.

Her VMA history makes the comeback particularly notable.

Madonna performed at the very first VMAs in 1984, later delivered her famous “Vogue” performance in 1990, and became the first solo female artist to receive the Video Vanguard Award in 1986.

Now, more than four decades after her first appearance at the ceremony, she’s once again opened the show.

And judging by the reaction, Madonna’s relationship with the VMAs is far from over.
