Every Hollywood career has a moment when fate seems to step in at exactly the right time. For Susan Damante, that moment came when she was just 19 years old.

Before audiences knew her as a familiar face on television, Damante had already made an impression as the first runner-up in the Miss California pageant. But her path to Hollywood took an unexpected turn in 1972, when a chance encounter helped launch her acting career.

During an audition at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, Damante dressed up and even removed her glasses, hoping to make the right impression. The audition didn’t go as planned. The following day, however, everything changed.

Director Michael Ritchie spotted her in her everyday look, complete with her distinctive Gloria Steinem-style glasses. He immediately introduced her to Robert Redford, and Damante was cast in the political satire The Candidate.

Although her role was uncredited, the six-week experience became something of a real-world film school, giving the young actress an invaluable introduction to the world of professional filmmaking.

From there, Damante built a diverse career across television and film during the 1970s and 1980s. She appeared in everything from cult horror movies such as Blood Sabbath to family-friendly wilderness adventures.

One of her most memorable roles came as Pat Robinson in The Adventures of the Wilderness Family trilogy. The films became favorites among audiences who loved stories about families escaping the noise of everyday life for the beauty and challenges of the wilderness.

Television viewers also became familiar with Damante through appearances on some of the era’s biggest shows, including Columbo, The Rockford Files, and Dallas. Her ability to move between different genres made her one of those dependable performers who could instantly bring personality and authenticity to a scene.

Her connection to Hollywood eventually became a family affair as well.

Damante’s daughters, Vinessa and Natalie Shaw, followed their mother into acting. Susan and Vinessa even appeared together in the 1992 comedy Ladybugs. Vinessa would later become widely recognized for her role as Allison in the beloved Halloween film Hocus Pocus.

But acting was never the only chapter of Damante’s creative life.

She eventually took her talents to the stage with her autobiographical one-woman show, Life… Death… And Entertainment. She also expanded her work behind the camera, writing, directing, and producing the 2018 short film Repercussions.

Her journey has also been shaped by personal challenges and resilience. Damante has spoken about overcoming Crohn’s disease and has maintained a long-standing devotion to Nichiren Buddhism, influences that have played an important role in her outlook on life and creativity.

Today, Susan Damante represents something special about classic Hollywood: the performers whose faces may not always have appeared above the title, but whose talent helped give an entire generation of movies and television shows their character.

From a young pageant contestant to a working actress, stage performer, filmmaker, and mother of two actresses, her story is a reminder that some of Hollywood’s most interesting journeys happen away from the spotlight.
